In custom diamond jewellery, the centre stone is not just the most visually prominent element, it is also typically the largest single cost factor. Getting this decision right means your piece will look exceptional and retain its meaning for a lifetime. Getting it wrong means expensive alterations or, worse, a piece you never feel quite right about.

The 4Cs, Explained Simply
Cut, The Most Important C
Cut refers not to the shape of the diamond (round, oval, pear etc.) but to the quality of how it has been faceted. A diamond's cut determines how effectively it captures and reflects light, what we commonly call its 'sparkle' or 'brilliance'.
A poorly cut diamond, even one with excellent colour and clarity, can look dull and lifeless. A beautifully cut diamond of modest colour and clarity can appear breathtaking. This is why experienced diamond buyers consistently prioritise cut above all other criteria.
GIA (the Gemological Institute of America) grades cut in five categories: Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair and Poor. At Gemrize, we strongly recommend choosing no lower than Very Good cut for your centre stone, and ideally Excellent where your budget allows.
Colour, Less Is More
Diamond colour is graded on a scale from D (completely colourless) to Z (noticeable yellow or brown tint). Colourless and near-colourless diamonds (D through J) are the most prized for traditional white diamond jewellery.
In practice, the colour difference between adjacent grades (D vs E, or F vs G) is nearly impossible to detect with the naked eye in a finished piece of jewellery. This is one of the most valuable insights Gemrize's wholesale expertise offers: you do not need to pay for a D-colour diamond to have a diamond that looks completely colourless in its setting.
For most custom diamond jewellery in white gold or platinum settings, we typically recommend G or H colour as the sweet spot, near-colourless to the eye, but at a significantly lower price than D–F stones.
Clarity, Inclusions Are Not Your Enemy
Clarity refers to the presence of internal characteristics (inclusions) and surface features (blemishes) in a diamond. GIA grades clarity from Flawless (FL) , with no inclusions visible under 10x magnification, down to Included (I1, I2, I3), where inclusions may be visible to the naked eye.
The critical question for most buyers is not 'how perfect is this diamond?' but rather 'can I see any inclusions in this diamond with my naked eye?'. For most clarity grades of VS2 (Very Slightly Included) and above, the answer is no. At Gemrize, we commonly source SI1 (Slightly Included 1) stones that are eye-clean, meaning no inclusions are visible without magnification, at a substantial saving over VS and VVS grades.

Carat, Size vs Quality
Carat is the unit of weight used to measure diamonds (1 carat = 0.2 grams). It is also the factor that has the most significant impact on price, because larger diamonds are rarer. However, carat is also the factor that is most frequently misunderstood.
Two diamonds of identical carat weight can look dramatically different in size depending on their cut. A well-cut 0.90ct round brilliant will often appear larger than a poorly cut 1.00ct stone, because its proportions are optimised to maximise surface area and brilliance.
Additionally, 'magic sizes' , 0.50ct, 0.75ct, 1.00ct, 1.50ct, 2.00ct, carry a price premium simply because of their round numbers. A 0.96ct diamond is virtually indistinguishable in size from a 1.00ct stone but can be purchased at a meaningful saving.

IGI (International Gemological Institute) is widely accepted and reliable. Avoid stones graded only by in-house certificates from the seller.

How to Approach Your Diamond Budget
One of the most constructive things you can do when beginning your custom diamond jewellery journey is to decide in advance how you want to allocate your budget between the stone and the setting. A common starting approach is to allocate roughly 70–80% to the centre diamond and 20–30% to the gold and design. However, this is entirely flexible based on your priorities.
If you love intricate design and are comfortable with a smaller or slightly lower-grade stone, that is a completely valid choice. If you want the most spectacular diamond possible and are happy with a simpler setting to showcase it, that is equally valid.
